Bureaucratic Blitzkrieg

For this project, I chose to do a synecdoche with references to Nazi Germany in the 1900's, and Donald Trump's 2025 presidency. My best friend, who has always been incredibly political and passionate about history, is what inspired me to do this topic. We recently caught up and he told me his fears as a queer man living in Trump's America, watching his rights being stripped away one by one. He mentioned things I hadn't even heard or realized the depth of. One of them being an early target of nazi book burnings: Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, or Institute of Sexology, founded by a gay Jewish physician advocating for LGBTQ rights. Queer people were among the marginalized groups terrorized by the Nazi party; years of research to help better understand them and prevent them from further discrimination was lost when the Nazis ravaged the institute. Although not as extreme, Trump's removal of DEI and mention of gay or transgender people from federal websites reflects small steps towards the same erasure queer people faced when their research was reduced to ashes.

However, Trump's executive orders reversing rules that give trans people safe access to shelter, banning them from the military, restricting health care for trans youth, removing protections for LGBTQ youth in schools, and denying incarcerated trans people healthcare and appropriate housing, are directly on par with Hitler strengthening Paragraph 175: the law in Germany that criminalized homosexuality. Those in concentration camps were badged with a pink upside-down triangle and later were reclaimed by the LGBTQ+ community as a symbol of pride and remembrance. Trump recently shared an article about the transgender military ban, featuring the infamous pink triangle crossed out. As the days go on, I see the comparison between Trump and Hitler slowly merging further into one. The only thing Trump lacks but would surprisingly benefit from,

is the Nazi's environmentalism. Further similarities include dehumanizing minority groups and using them as scapegoats for larger issues, referring to journalists as "fake news" (or as the nazis called it, the lying press), disregard for checks and balances, and demonizing the left and academic institutions.

To me, the most difficult part of this assignment was actually coming up with ideas and finding a way to put it all together. I wanted to portray the situation and send a message in a nuanced way, without it being too messy and having the message get lost along the way. By the end of the project, I was very satisfied with the image I had put together.

For the actual project, I made the background the Institute of Sexology to represent the oppression towards queer people during the Holocaust. The statue, Genius of Victory by Adolf Wamper, one of the approved art pieces displayed in the nazis Great Exhibition of German Art, is meant to represent Donald Trump. Since a bald eagle often represents the United States and strong patriotism, I thought it was fitting that the statue also includes an eagle. I placed the statue upon the Resolute Desk, which resides in the Oval Office. I positioned the statue to make it seem as if it's ordering or directing the paper planes and missiles towards the intersectional feminism flag I placed on the Institute of Sexology. The paper war planes and missiles represent the rush of executive orders signed by Trump in the first several weeks of his 2025 presidency. What most stood out to me from my conversation with my best friend was his comparison of the Trump administration flooding the zone, to the Nazis' infamous use of blitzkrieg, both doing as much as possible all at once to overwhelm and exhaust the opponent. This is the comparison I wanted to convey. I put in a random group of people on the sidewalk in front of the institution as a way to indicate that anyone passing you on the street could be affected by these policies; you can't always tell what's going on with a person based on what they look like. They could be trans or cis, rich or poor, healthy or sick. Although I did focus more on the transgender issue, immigrants, the environment, our healthcare, and our overall livelihoods are at stake, which is also why I decided to put the intersectional feminism flag and not just the trans flag. I made it all black and white so it looks coherent, with the exception of the people on the sidewalk. The institute is darker to signify the past, with the planes and statue are white to signify the present. The people have kept their color to signify life and emphasize that they and their lives are what matters the most, even if they are just strangers in passing. As the popular quote by NOFX goes,

Turned away asylum-seekers
Fed us suspicions and fears
We didn't raise our voice
We didn't make a fuss
It's funny, there was no one left to notice
When they came for us"
"First, they put away the dealers
Keep our kids safe and off the street
Then they put away the prostitutes
Keep married men cloistered at home
Then they shooed away the bums
Then they beat and bashed the queers
